UKCA marking for steelwork is a mandatory certification in the UK that proves fabricated structural steel products meet the requirements of the BS EN 1090 standard.

To obtain UKCA marking, a steel fabricator must implement and document a Factory Production Control (FPC) system in line with BS EN 1090.

This FPC system includes controls for materials, welding, inspection and testing. Manufacturers must undergo factory production control assessments to obtain the UKCA Certificate of Conformity and are audited by a UKAS-accredited certification body.

The manufacturer receives a Factory Production Control Certificate, which enables them to issue a Declaration of Performance and affix the UKCA mark to their products.

This marking ensures products comply with UK regulations and standards for health, safety and environmental protection, providing confidence in the quality and safety of the steelwork.

BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2 (EXC2) is a quality standard for structural steel structures, indicating a moderate level of risk and control is needed during fabrication. EXC2 applies to most standard construction projects, such a residential buildings and commercial properties, requiring the contractor to prove their ability to produce work that meets the specified quality level for CE marking under the Construction Products Regulation.
